The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a new press statement following the filing of an appeal by its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, against his terrorism conviction at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

In the statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group confirmed that the appeal was formally submitted on February 4, 2026, challenging both the judgment and the life sentences imposed on Kanu. IPOB described the verdict as unjust and alleged that the legal process was influenced by political considerations—claims that have not been independently verified.

The group further raised concerns over Kanu’s detention conditions, arguing that they could complicate access to legal counsel and the appeal process. IPOB maintained that the case raises broader questions about fairness and due process within Nigeria’s justice system.

IPOB also commented on the country’s ongoing security challenges, linking rising insecurity to what it described as systemic governance failures. The organisation called on the Federal Government to reassess its approach to justice and national unity, while reiterating its demand for Kanu’s immediate release.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Government nor the judiciary had issued an official response to the claims contained in the statement. IPOB remains a proscribed organisation under Nigerian law, and security agencies continue to caution against activities connected to the group.
