IPOB PRESS STATEMENT: SHARIA, NIGERIA, AND THE FUTURE OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the supreme leadership of the irrepressible Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the prophet of God that saw it all coming, has taken note of recent reports—including the report by Riley Moore to former U.S. President Donald Trump—on the purported repeal of the Sharia penal code in Nigeria. We wish to speak plainly and without equivocation: the ongoing debate over Shariah exposes the fundamental impossibility of coexistence under Nigeria’s current state structure.


Let it be clear: IPOB respects the right of Muslims to practice their religion fully, including Shariah law within their communities. There is no attempt by us or any credible authority to stop this practice. Our concern lies with the imposition of Shariah on non-Muslims and the denial of basic freedoms to Judeo-Christian communities and other faiths across the North. This is not a theoretical debate—it is a matter of life, death, and the survival of entire communities under the ongoing jihad.


The Nigerian state has proven incapable of protecting its citizens from religiously motivated persecution. From Sokoto to Borno, from Plateau to beyond, Christians, non-Muslims and even Muslims themselves, are systematically targeted. Shariah, when enforced beyond its proper community, becomes a weapon of oppression, not a system of justice. Riley Moore’s report is a stark reminder: Nigeria’s so-called secularism is a façade, masking a dangerously fractured legal order where conflicting codes govern the same territory.


IPOB reiterates its unwavering position: A restored Biafra nation-state is the only guarantee for the protection of life, religion, and human dignity across West Africa. In a free and sovereign Biafra, all non-Muslims and any other persecuted  group from the North and elsewhere will enjoy full citizenship, security, and the right to live unmolested according to their conscience in line with ancient Igbo libertarian code of live and let-live (Egbe bere, Ugo bere).


We call on Riley Moore, US Congress, Israeli Knesset and the rest of the international community that still has conscience, to recognize the reality on the ground: Nigeria is not a safe home for Judeo-Christians under its current system. The ongoing targeting of non-Muslims is real, deliberate, and systemic. IPOB remains committed to securing a homeland where justice, religious freedom, and human rights are absolute, not conditional.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly condemned the deployment of security forces in Onitsha , Anambra State, describing the action as reckless and dangerous, with the potential to inflame tensions and destabilise the area. In a press statement issued on January 27, 2026, by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said the actions were carried out under the authority of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo , and resulted in security operatives confronting traders and protesters.
